The Velveteen Rabbit, Or How Toys Become Real

Image
HERE was once a velveteen rabbit, and in the beginning he was really splendid. He was fat and bunchy, as a rabbit should be; his coat was spotted brown and white, he had real thread whiskers, and his ears were lined with pink sateen. On Christmas morning, when he sat wedged in the top of the Boy's stocking, with a sprig of holly between his paws, the effect was charming. There were other things in the stocking, nuts and oranges and a toy engine, and chocolate almonds and a clockwork mouse, but the Rabbit was quite the best of all. For at least two hours the Boy loved him, and then Aunts and Uncles came to dinner, and there was a great rustling of tissue paper and unwrapping of parcels, and in the excitement of looking at all the new presents the Velveteen Rabbit was forgotten. A Day In The Day Of

"I believe that the best way to prepare for a Future Life is to be kind, live one day at a time, and do the work you can do best, doing it as well as you can.” – Elbert Hubbard Sleep last night was impossible.  Between tossing and turning, my bastard cats got the zoomies and I kept hearing things crash to the floor and guitar strings thrum as if being pulled by razor sharp pitiless claws, which they were.  At 6 I gave up, got up, started the coffee maker and showered.  Thank God the mirror was fogged up and I couldn't see my reflection, moribund old rabbits are not at a premium here and I get enough of that at Walmart.  I got dressed, selected the day's boots, straightened my ears and tail, and then fed my demon kitties.  I sat down and went through my internet routine, answering messages here on DA and reading the left wing news sites I am so addicted to.  I then went out to the porch and had my first smoke of the day, it was cold and bright and anyone else

Pauline and the Matches!

Image
Hi Guys! I didn't think it was possible, but I found a nineteenth-century children's book author who's as nasty as Dame Dingle !  You might recall that I've posted several of DD's stories right here on Hybrid !  If you want to refresh your memory , just enter "Dame Dingle" in the handy Hybrid search box !  Anyhow, today's offering is Pauline and the Matches , by Aunt Grumble !   This is another McLoughlin Brothers classic from right around 1870 or so.  The idea is to teach kids not to mess with matches , but you can tell that Aunt Grumble is loving how this story turns out ! Hey, hold on , you might ask -- what's anthro about this poo-poo ?  Well, I'll tell you !  See, there's these kittens that act kinda like a Greek Chorus .  That means they just show up and point out what the main character is doing wrong !  Check it out and you'll see what I mean !     Man, that's tough !  But Aunt Grumble knows that Pauline had
