The Cockroach Union and Waterbugs Protective Association

Image
Hi Guys! I'm back with some more anthro bug weirdness courtesy of Peterman's Roach Food!   This stuff was designed to kill cockroaches and other insect vermin way back in the early 1900s !  It came in a bright red tin covered with microscopic pictures that tell a most distressing story !  Seems that the bugs are up in arms because something is killing them off !  They have formed a " protective association " and are marching in protest kind of like Coxey's Army !           But it's no good !  All that marching has worked up the bugs' appetites !  So they check in to chow down on some of that delicious " roach food ."  Too bad it's poison !  One by one, the roaches eat the tainted feast and they croak , right there on the package !     Man, that's tough !  But I guess if you've got cockroaches marching around in your kitchen , this is how you deal with them !   ...

Strange Ally Comics

Image
Cover art for 'Strange Ally', May 1958 This most violent of the golden age kid's comics was in flagrant violation of the Comics Code and the publishers were hauled in front of a joint session of the U. S. Senate and HUAC.  William Deltoid Bunny, president and CEO of Sanguinary Tails Distributed did not help matters one little bit by denying all knowledge of the comic in question and also his own identity.  Pressed, he finally admitted that he was, indeed, in charge of STD publications but that the senators were too stupid to understand a damn thing about the comics industry and, in the case of Senator Buford (D.-Florida), too inbred.  He then began to reminiscence about his own deviant sexual practices with evident gusto and ended by dropping his pants to show his "great respect for this august body".  Every single copy was ordered destroyed and Mr. Bunny was dragged away by capitol police with the help of Senator Buford.  The entire funny anim...

Flyville Civic Holiday

Image
Hi Guys ! When it comes to anthro bugs , it doesn't get much weirder than this !  It's a pack of fly paper , made by F. W. Briggs of Buffalo , New York, around 1915 !  Briggs isn't particularly famous for anything and nobody knows who the artist behind this image is, but once you start looking at it , it kinda burns its way into your mind !  I mean, what's going on here?  There's this old bald guy and he's got some sort of fly jamboree happening where his hair used to be!  He seems pretty unhappy , which is understandable .  Take a closer look :   If nothing else, all that fly action has to tickle !  I don't get why he doesn't just slap the heck out of those pests , but I guess that's where Briggs's fly paper comes to the rescue !  He can just plaster all that arsenic-soaked tissue on his scalp and all will be well !  OK, I get it , this is the kinda thing that's not meant to be taken too literally ....

1940's Hats and Hairstyles

Image
Here we go into the 1940's! As longer hair became popular again and more women entered the work force, the snood (a type of hairnet) became a must. These could even be decorated for wear after work as this young filly shows here~ Hats and gloves were a smart look as Laura shows us~ Victorian-style hats with veils, feathers, and wings became a popular style again~ Hairstyles embellished with flowers such as gardenias were in style too~ Here is the art in progress with some other styles mixed in~the 1950's are coming soon!

Izzy and Dizzy

Hi Guys! Here's a little something for you from Ha Ha Comics number 45 , published in September 1947 !   Ha Ha was put out by the American Comics Group beginning in 1943 .  These guys, better known as ACG , were also behind the world's first horror comic, Adventures into the Unknown , which came out in 1948 !  That's beside the point , though.  Ha Ha was one of the most successful funny animal comics, with a print run that lasted more than ten years and almost 100 issues ! So today we've got a story about two bear cubs, Izzy and Dizzy .  Just flippin' through the pages, it looks like standard fare :  two mischievous furry kids get into various hijinks .  The end .  But on second look , there's a couple of curious things going on here.   It seems that these two bears are in possession of a magic lamp!   How they got it is unknown and whether it's genuine or not is anybody's guess .  That being said, it se...

Handy Pandy

Image
"Handy Pandy"   Hi Guys! Today I've got something for you from the Shameless Ripoff Department !  It's called " Handy Pandy " and you can find it in the ninth issue of All-Humor Comics for Spring 1948 !  Because shooting at people is *always* funny! All-Humor was a typical mishmash of stories featuring different characters, both human and funny animal .  The title itself was published by Quality Comics beginning in 1946 .  For the most part, the art is pretty good , even above-average .  I don't have any complaints about the writing either.      Andy Panda   What gets me is that nobody at Quality had any problems with swiping Walter Lantz's 'toon character, Andy Panda , and grafting him into All-Humor's motley lineup !  That's Andy above, properly credited on the cover of a 1970s Whitman Gold Key Comic .  As you can see, Andy was popular for decades after he was created in 1939 !  Admittedly, All-Humor's...

Apotheosis, Or, Behold The Savior!

Image
For while I brought this world cleansing and redemption, even as I stretched forth my hand to sweep the old order away, Alas!  The foul blade of the assassin did remove me and deliver my brethren unto those who made this hell.   But- Cry not for me, rather your children. Mourn not for I, but for our nation. There is one coming with the light. He will divide the quick from the dead. His time is nigh. The evil will look for refuge, but none is forthcoming. The prince of this world will falter, and fall. There will be no more suffering. And the people will sing hosannas in their joy. To be one with him is denied me. No honor has a prophet at home. All will rejoice at his ascension, and he shall put the crown upon his own head. Wickedness will die. Our redeemer cometh. He is here! https://misterscribbles.blogspot.com/
