Krazy Komics

Image
Krazy Komics # 1, July 1942.  Timely.  Stan Lee, Editor.  Timely became Marvel.  Some of the artist's in this I recognize, Chad Grothkopf. Al Jaffee (b. 1928, still with us), and Dave Berg.  Chad drew Hoppy the Marvel Bunny, and people of my generation will recognize Jaffee and Berg. First story, first issue. Hmmm... Issue the second.  I suspect this is Chad Grothkopf, the bunny looks like Hoppy. The f***king nerve.  If I got a box of matches I sure don't need ideas from Stan Lee on how to pass the time, I don't think anyone has been in that old barn for years! Tommy Toughcat.  He's from Brooklyn, note the derby.  As exotic as this accent is to me and everyone else west of Joisey it probably was standard stuff for Timely and the boys.  Bugs Bunny is from Brooklyn so dat's jake by me! Anyone care to guess who these guys are talking about? A sense of subtlety and understatement.    I really should be writing that book instead of reading comics designed for 10 year o

Triage!

This Hybrid cartoonist has 20 dollars.  Cigarettes and wine for tonight will cost him 17 dollars and change.  His 4 cats will run out of food by lunchtime, and there will be no more money for a week.  Here we see Billy consulting with his inner accountants on the correct choice to be made. Two bucks will buy a whole lot of cat food, after all. https://www.topcartoons.tv/apple-andy/ Billy D Bunny.  Yes, That's A Rabbit.  Deal With It.

Two Modern Red Riding Hoods

Image
This is a project I had been thinking about for a while. Three new spins on the Red Riding Hood tale based on records-the first from the 1920's,second the 1950's,and last the 1960's. I have already posted the sketch for the first-here are the finished art and videos.  1920's Red Riding Hood (How could Red Riding Hood)-also one of the first songs to be banned from airplay! Although tame by today's standards,it was considered to be too suggestive in the 1920's. A Hip Red Riding Hood-a 1950's beatnik inspired tale- Still working on the third! Can you guess the song from the 1960's?

Edmond-Francois Calvo

Image
Such lovely rabbit drawings.  The handsome male bunny varies which foot he has lost, tres incroyable! The French overthrow the Beast.  This superior comic has never seen distribution in the U.S.  It may be available, but it is expensive.  All English copies I have seen sell in the 50 dollar range.  I see M. Calvo has saved the best anthro animal of all for his country!  From The Beast Is Dead, 1946. The Beast.  Many Americans do not understand what happened to France after WWI.  But if it had not been for France we would not be a nation now, free from the hated British. We owe them. Patamousse est un jeune lapin qui, après le lycée, devient explorateur puis détective. I hope that clears things up for everybody! (Patamousse is a young rabbit who, after High School, becomes an explorer and a detective.  I cannot tell if this means after school ends for the day or after he graduates). This guy is really good.

Blackjack O'Hare

Image
This is Blackjack O'Hare, mercenary and leader of the Black Bunny Brigade.   He is a bad guy. He has prosthetic legs and may have robot hands. He seems very focused.   He likes a fight... ...but everyone likes money. And this is his killer, Rocket Raccoon.  Art by Skottie Young. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocket_Raccoon Blackjack dies.  Oops, Comic Vine says he lived.  First appearance in The Incredible Hulk back in 1982. No, first appearance in Marvel Preview 1976.  Hell, I might have that. I need to read this.  The net is maddening at times.   With the Black Bunny Brigade. Later he gets a new crew. Mike Mignola, 1985.  Seems that Rocket and Blackjack are forced to 'cooperate'. https://youtu.be/Pu7yBgEdxCw See ya in the funny pages! https://misterscribbles.blogspot.com/
