Bastet!

Image
Bastet! So I was chatting with my colleague Andibi about flies, and he mentioned using fly strips.  I told him that I didn't want to come home to a cat mummified in sticky tape.  A couple of hours later he sent me this -   A big shout out to the Anthro Art Wizard of Maine!  Oh, and that's Andrew the Bee, one of your more unhinged insect alter egos.   https://www.deviantart.com/andibi   Why Andy would be calling on the rabbit for help is anyone's guess, a bunny's idea of responsibility is headlong flight.   Billy does drive a '57 Chevy but he doesn't have a license. In fact, he doesn't own a car.  Billy is not exactly a team player.

Superkernel

Hi Guys! Before I go too deep into today's fare , I gotta give a shout-out to Steven Altis , whose blog, Plastic Pumpkins , provided me with some key background info on this otherwise obscure comic .   Now I thought Jo-Joy , the anthro jack-in-the-box, was about as far-out as you could get, but how about an anthro popcorn kernel ?  Yes, you heard me right !  I'm talking about Superkernel , the 1970s mascot of the Weekly Reader Book Club !   When you became a WRBC club member , you got a couple of new books every month along with a copy of the WRBC's in-house publication, " Supermag ."  From what I can tell, Supermag was a lot like Dynamite or any other magazine aimed at hip 12-year olds .  It contained topical articles of interest to kids along with the usual assortment of games, puzzles , and comics .   Superkernel began his career as second fiddle to Supermag' s leading characters, Superperson and Mudball .  As time went on, however, the fly

Komic Kartoons

Image
Pathetic.   This explains why I survive my lifestyle. Komic Kartoons,  September 1945.  Timely.   This wretched and completely unfunny comic is now selling in the 250 dollar price range.  Bertie Mouse with pop gun, Andy Wolf with apple.  Oscar Pig in tree, he does not appear in this at all.  I cannot find the artists or anything about this, but at least Timely (Marvel) had the wit to yank all further attempts at making this go.  The great Chad Grothkopf, who animated the first TV cartoon, was working at Timely in 1942 so lack of talent does not explain this awful comic, although the war may have taken all the good artists away for the duration.  Stan Lee was there as well, I doubt he was enthused over this.    Chad Grothkopf. From 1942 to 1951 Timely was located on the 19th floor of the Empire State building. Doc Savage lived in the Empire State building as well.  Coincidence?  I think not!

Benjamin Pink

Image
Preliminary illustrations for The Adventures Of Benjamin Pink.     Benjamin is unapologetically macho. There are people complaining about the example this rabbit sets.  He is in charge, secure in himself, and focused.  Some people today think that sexist. The name on the boat says it all.  From Benjamin's Treasure, Rosemary Wells and Garth Williams. Command presence. One tough bunny. The way a marriage should be. Handsome, bold, prompt.  A class act! People such as Benjamin have no hang-ups about friends.    Bingo. Somebody's in for an ass whuppin'. I don't like the looks of this one little bit. Benjamin's Treasure is adapted from a chapter of The Adventures of Benjamin Pink, 1951.  Rosemary Wells colored the original Williams black and white art. Not a good reproduction, but worth seeing.  Good luck, Mr. and Mrs. Pink!
