Elsie the Cow Comics: Beauregard the Brat!
Elsie the Cow Comics No. 1 |
Hey Guys!
It's Andrew the Bee again, back with some anthro cow fun! This time we're taking a look at Elsie the Cow Comics for October-November 1949. I already told you how Elsie was the mascot for the Borden Dairy Company and pretty much an American household name from the 1930s to the 1990s. But did you know that Elsie was married and had a couple of kids? Well, it's true and you can read about them and their silly doings in this short-lived comic book that ran for three issues in 1949-1950.
You've got Elsie, of course, who is the level-headed smart one. Then there's her husband, Elmer, who is a stupid blowhard. The daughter, Beulah, is cute and likable, but maybe a bit gullible too. Finally there's Beauregard, who is an amoral little brat!
Most of the stories in Elsie number one concern Elmer and his dumb backfiring schemes. Comedy, after all, relies on misery, and nobody wants to see a lady cow cry! After several outings that feature Elmer repeatedly knocked on his keister, we find Beauregard filling in at the edges with short two-pagers that show what a scamp he is. Let's check out his style in "The Not So Dumbbell!":

OK guys, that's all for now -- See you next time!
Cover and comic art, Al Fago. Excellent post! Considering that Elmer is the mascot for the glue company I find this unsettling.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I hadn't heard of Al Fago before -- Always good to know who the artists were! Heh, I guess glue was the one thing Elmer did right. I imagine he probably sniffed a lot of it, too. Check out that humidor on his smoking stand -- I don't think that's Virginny tobacco pouring out of it...
