Teen-age Animal Funnies
Billy D Bunny has already written a great tribute to anthro cartoonist and animator Dan Gordon. I remembered seeing some comics he did that were a "funny animal" version of the popular Archie comics in the 1940's. Guess what? I found some of the covers -with names like Tommy Cat, Heppity Hare, and Kitty Katt, how could these teens go wrong?

Awesome! I never heard of these, but this is pure Dan Gordon for sure!
ReplyDeleteAlso, this ran for two years, 1947 - 49. Rock n Roll was just around the corner, but this sure looks like a lot of the Rock variety of comics. Crooners were about to give way to the New Guard!
ReplyDeleteYes!I'm glad you found out what years they were released-I was pretty sure around the 1940's era
DeleteAll you have to do is enter the comic and the year in search, the data base on comics now is unreal. I have learned more in the past couple of years off the net than a lifetime of reading books has taught me. This particular comic came up on a dozen sites instantly. It only ran for two years, I guess the intended audience was not into funny animal comics. Growing up the ones I saw I would never read, Heckle and Jeckle aside, but this stuff between 1940 and 1958 or so was pure gold. Comics had a bad name when I was a kid and I was fifteen before I discovered that comics were 'OK'! Now that I have some perspective I am astonished at how good some of the artists were, Frank Frazetta was one of them. Odd thinking about him doing funny animals but he did and those are outstanding.
DeleteOh, and you will notice the one with the dog in the tub was sold in Australia, price 9 p. America marches on!
DeleteI'm surprised at the amount of info on the web too-you can look anything up now!
DeleteAnd growing by the second. Soon everything written down not in private hands will be on the net. This is the beginning of a new order of civilization.
DeleteVery cool -- I've never heard of this title. The idea has a lot of potential -- It might be time to revisit it!
