Introducing ZAXCKEE

 

Hi Guys!

Today it's my pleasure to welcome a new artist to the Hybrid crew!  I'm talking about Zaxckee, who also goes by the Internet handles BiTronic and ColaRice!  He grew up in Singapore, but is originally of Filipino descent.  You probably know this already, but the Philippines have produced some of the greatest comic-book artists in the world!  

Zaxckee has done some first-rate comic work himself, but right now we're gonna check out an awesome example of his poster design!

This is way cool and I could go on about it for a while -- but I think it might be better if the artist gives it to us in his own words.  Here's what Zaxckee says:

"- The figure is an anthropomorphized version of the titular Firebird from the Russian folktale. Design-wise, I referenced the costume designs of Léon Bakst for the ballet when designing the general form, while style-wise and decorative ornaments were inspired by Oskar Kokoschka’s illustrated Book, The Dreaming Youths, as well as Gustav Klimt's work. The usage of flowing wave-like lines and shapes used were also inspired by abstract paintings of Abdulmari Asia Imao, a Filipino national artist.

- Visually, it can be seen as a symbol for Igor Stravinsky's orchestral ballet piece; The Firebird is holding a conductor's baton, and the shapes of the wings and the fire resemble a dress

- Species-wise, The Firebird themselves is an attempt at an original concept; a combination of both contemporary art illustrating it as a Pheonix, Chinese papercut illustrations of Roosters (particularly the comb/crest of the head), and the Luzon Bleeding Heart. I chose the latter as a little nod to my cultural identity as Filipino diaspora who grew up in Singapore; Luzon Bleeding Hearts are rare doves native to the Philippines, but in 2012 two pairs were brought over to Singapore as part of conservation efforts."

 

You don't often see anthro artists who put so much thought into their pictures -- and when you combine it with talent like this, you get amazing results!  Zaxckee is definitely going places and here at Hybrid, we feel pretty lucky to have caught him before he gets up into the stratosphere!
