Oh, and speaking of voting, Deacon Mushrat brings in the bobcat Simple J. Malarkey to clean the swamp of subversive elements. Could Kelly have been satirizing someone?
It don't get more Furbunch then we'all here at Hybrid, no Sir!
Ha ha! I wish I could get my hands on some of those fonts! The art's quite different, but the presentation reminds me a lot of John Held Jr's Gay 90s illustrations.
ReplyDeleteJohn Held was big enough that I knew who he was in grade school, I am not a fan but his art does stand out.
DeleteSure looks hand drawn to me. In one article he told his editor his elaborate lettering was hell to draw. Keep the fonts, I want the original art!
ReplyDeleteOh, I figured it was hand-drawn; I just wish the I could get fonts like that on my computer!
DeleteOriginal daily Pogo strips sell for around $100 on eBay; Sundays a little over $300.
DeleteTammany Tiger looks like he's had enough P.T. for one day -- and I don't mean Physical Therapy.
ReplyDeleteWhen Pogo was running I had trouble reading it, I had no idea usually what Kelly was talking about, what with all the political topics. Now that I am looking closer at it I am just wowed by the artwork. The Disney training sure shows but that ain't no bad thing. His critters are very cute, even Simple J. Malarkey, the hyena that is Joseph McCarthy is fun to look at. When the editors of many papers objected to the politics and wanted to run Pogo on the editorial pages, Walt put a sack over Malarkey's head that looked very like a Klan outfit, worked just as well since everyone knew who he was supposed to be. His bulldog J. Edgar is a riot. I would like to find out more about Tamananny, P. T. Bridgeport is the character I remember from reading the strip because of the lettering.
DeleteKelly was born in Philadelphia, but moved to Bridgeport, Conn. later on and attended Warren Harding High School there along with a young fellow named Al "Lil' Abner" Capp. In Kelly's early days as a cartoonist, he illustrated the life of P. T. Barnum.
DeleteExcellent to know, Muzzlehatch, just the sort of info I need more of. Keep 'em coming, and thanks a lot!
