The Poky Little Puppy

This ending is perhaps the saddest ever written.  The Poky Little Puppy is the best selling children's picture book of all time.  The author is Janette Sebring Lowrey and it was illustrated by Gustaf Tenggren.  Tenggren is the artist responsible for the way Disney's Pinnochio looked.

Janette Sebring Lowrey was a Texan and, despite being one of the best selling authors like, ever, died in San Antonio in relative obscurity.

I am happy to say that she was very wealthy when she died.  The Poky Little Puppy was published in 1942 and is still going strong.  Next time -

  1. It's not such a sad ending -- Seems like the puppies' mother makes dessert every night anyway... I was waiting for the Poky Little Puppy to get kacked on the road!

  2. I had to look that up. How awful! And the poor little puppy missed his strawberry shortcake, the greatest dessert there is. Heartbreaking.

    1. Well, yeah, but his mom will make some more... He just needs to be patient.

    1. Gustaf got royalties, Ms. Lowrey did not. Fine, she was a newbie and he was one of the best illustrators alive. She was worth north of 5 million dollars when she died in 86, so I would say she went out as a winner.
