Between 1933 and 1936, the Arcadia had a brief stint as a boxing venue.  The most noteworthy bouts at the Arcadia took place in 1934, when a still relatively unknown Joe Louis won three fights, two by knockout, on his way to claiming the world heavyweight boxing championship.  Then, in 1936, the building’s owners, looking to cash in on the growing popularity of roller skating, converted the Arcadia into a roller rink.  It continued to operate as a roller rink through the next two decades.  During the late 1950s, the Chicago Westerners of the women’s professional roller derby league played some of their home matches at the Arcadia Gardens.
In the early morning hours of Sunday, January 4, 1959, an extra-alarm fire destroyed the building.

  1. Very nice! You've got both Elsie *and* Elmer. And in the 45-plus years that I've been eating the Filet-O-Fish I've never once seen that "Phil A. O'Fish" thing -- very weird!

And speaking of filets, what's with the Chick Fil-A thing? I assume it's some kind of meme involving Westboro Baptist Church, but what does it mean??

  2. That was a left wing satire of Chick Fil A, I took it down because you know what could happen if the clowns at blogger decide that we are taking a position one way or the other. Apolitical, that's us!

  3. Here in the UK we have a family of Meerkats in commercials. These meerkats are also Eastern European despite being African animals. The whole joke is the accent compare the market, sounds like meerkat in a heavy Slavic accent. Look em up, you could probably do an entire article on them.
