The Anthro artist army marches on! https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/childrens/childrens-authors/article/71281-q-a-with-dav-pilkey.html   Way to go, Dave!  Dreams sometimes do come true. My brother found this on Bobby London's Instagram page.  If you don't know Bobby London, he is one of the great anthro cartoonists and made my teen years a little more bearable.   Mr. London was one of the Air Pirates. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Pirates   Bobby also took over Thimble Theater in 1986, but there were differences 'twixt him and the owners-   In June 1992, London began a continuity in which Olive Oyl receives a Baby Bluto doll, and decides to get rid of it.  Passerbys think that she intends to get an abortion. Worried over even the implication of the a-word, the syndicate fired London and refused to run the continuity.  They've been running repeats of Sagendorf strips ever since. Bobby and my brother argue frequently.

Hambone

Hi Guys! Here's a little something from the pages of Ha-Ha Comics number 75 for December-January 1950 !  You might remember that Ha-Ha was one of the bigger funny animal titles of the 1940s and early 1950 s.  And why not?  They had a solid lineup of memorable characters and the art and stories were generally pretty good .   Today's tale concerns " Hambone ," an anthro pig-boy .  I'm not sure why his parents named him after a cut of meat , but I'm guessing it's because they couldn't resist the idea of " ham " and " bone " rolled into one .  Most of us know what a " ham " is -- basically it's a guy who overacts and behaves in, well, a cartoonish fashion .  " Bone " probably comes from " boner ."  No, wait !  That's not what you think it is !  Back in 1950 , "boner" was common slang for " mistake " or " joke ."   Anyhow, our story opens with Hambone in

Hot-Diggity Dogs

Image
Hot-Diggity Dogs Magazine Advertisement, June 1949   Hi Guys! From the Hybrid Kitchen comes Elsie the Cow's recipe for Hot-Diggity Dogs !  These dee-licious anthropomorphic hot dogs are made with Borden's Chateau cheese food.  What?   You can't find Chateau at your supermarket ?  No surprise there -- it hasn't been made in many moons !  But you could just as easily substitute any soft white cheese , or yellow if you prefer.  I mean, it's hard to go wrong with hot dogs, bacon, and cheese !   Unless, of course, you're a cow .  But I'm not going to get into that now .  Let's just imagine how good these guys are going to taste once you get 'em off the grill and into those hot-dog buns ! Bon appetit , mes amis!  Until next time!     *******

Red Rabbit

Image
Hi Guys! Today I've got something for you from Red Rabbit Comics number 19 for February-March 1951 !  I gotta tell ya , Sorting out who published Red Rabbit is kinda difficult , as the book is variously credited to J. Charles Love Publishing Company, Dearfield Publishing Company , or Deerfield Publishing Company .  All of them are pretty obscure and it looks like they didn't produce a lot of comics.  Besides Red Rabbit, probably the best-known title associated with these guys is Foxy Fagan , another funny animal character who first appeared in 1946 .   But that doesn't matter .  What's interesting about Red Rabbit is its artist .  Red was drawn by Etta Parks , who later got married and became Etta Hulme .  My esteemed colleague, Billy D. Bunny , has talked about her elsewhere , but I want to mention her again because she's one of the few women artists who made a career in comics!  She was also a bigtime editorial cartoonist for the Fort Worth, Texas, Sta
